On the 15th of June 2025, Randonneurs Laponia will host the fourth edition of Midnight Sun Randonnée, an epic round trip across the Scandinavian peninsula. Follow river valleys, lake shores and fjords. Cross snow-capped mountains and the Arctic Circle. Experience 24-hour daylight conditions during the summer solstice.

Entry fee

Entry fee is 250 EUR until the 31st of December. Then 300 EUR until the 31st of March. Thereafter 350 EUR until the 1st of June. Entry fees are not refunded however starting places can be transfered or resold at cost (or lower) until the 1st of June.

What’s included in the entry fee?

Midnight Sun Randonnée is a non-commercial event. An overwhelming percentage of the budget covers food and sleeping arrangements for the riders during the event. Included in the entry fee are: a brevet card, warm and cold meals, snacks and beverages both at all checkpoints on route; also before and after the event. Also included are basic sleeping arrangements at the start location and at eight checkpoints (which for the most part include showers, drying facilities and in some cases saunas). Some checkpoints also have mechanical services and an assortment of spare parts. The entry fee also includes long term parking during the event, a bagdrop service between Baggböle Manor and the hotel Scandic Plaza before start, and for participants who finish the ride: validation by Les Randonneurs Mondiaux and a commemorative medal. For riders who DNF at checkpoint Mo i Rana in Norway, the entry fee includes a taxi service back to Sweden. All riders are welcome to participate in a pre-event coffee ride on Saturday the day before start and a post-event celebration of Swedish Midsummer’s Eve on Friday, the day after the event finishes.

Qualifying to the ride

This grande randonnée has a demanding course profile and the region’s subarctic climate can produce very testing weather conditions. If you are not an experienced randonneur it is important that you make a realistic assessment of your chances of finishing the ride before you register. That said, if you have completed a brevet series or a corresponding ultra-distance race during the past two years then chances are high you will also finish this brevet. MSR does not require qualification but the organiser recommends that inexperienced riders complete a BRM 400 during the spring leading up the event. The organiser does not ask for signed medical certificates, however as with organised events in general, participants are required to have a third-party insurance in case of an accident during the ride.

In case of DNS

Entry fees are not refunded however starting places can be transfered or resold at cost (or lower) until the 1st of June. Please note! Food for the whole event will be ordered on Monday the 2nd of June. Excluding emergencies and unforseen circumstances, if you do make the decision to withdraw from the event, please inform the organiser no later than the 1st of June! By doing so you will help reduce food waste in the project as food for the whole event will then not be ordered for you.

Time cut-offs

As of 2024 cut-off times at intermidiate checkpoints no longer apply. The time frames stated in the brevet card are now described as guidelines to help a rider keep a suffient pace between checkpoints in order to complete the ride within the designated time limit. For MSR 2025 the time limit is 90:59, calculated on a course length of 1 213 km. Whereas the time frames for checkpoints are guidelines the time limit for the whole ride is definate. Riders arriving at the end checkpoint after 90:59 hours are not assigned a FIN (Finisher) in the ride results but instead a OTL (Over the Time Limit).

If you abandon the ride

As in all randonnées, if you abandon the event, you are responsible for your own transportation back to the start location. If you abandon the ride on the Swedish side of the border there are bus connections from all checkpoints. From Kittelfjäll: bus nr 417 to Vilhelmina, then change to bus nr 14 to Umeå. From Vuoggatjålme: (Camp Polcirklen) take bus 104 to Arjeplog, then bus nr 26 to Skellefteå and from there bus nr 20 to Umeå.

Public transportation between Norway and Sweden is limited. For riders who abandon the brevet at the checkpoint in Mo i Rana the organiser has arranged a taxi service to Hemavan in Sweden free of charge. From Hemavan riders can then take a regional bus service (bus nr 31) back to Umeå. The taxi in Mo i Rana departs from the hotel Scandic Meyergården on the 18th of June at 10:00.

Bag drop

This ultra-distance event is an exploration into the sub arctic wilderness which aims to capture this experience and the solitude with nature. In the spirit of past expeditions, riders are expected to carry all requisite equipment on their bikes from start to finish. In other words, this event has no bag drop service.

Rules & Regulations

A brevet that is longer than 1 000 km is not sanctioned by Audax Club Parisien (ACP) but instead by the world organisation Les Randonneurs Mondiaux (RM) which promotes randonnée cycling globally. These ultra-distance brevets over 1 000 km therefore have the designation LRM (Les Randonneurs Mondiaux). They are organised in the same way as ACP-sanctioned brevets, so-called Brevets des Randonneurs Mondiaux (BRM), but these ultra-distance brevets may have higher registration fees which include food and sleeping accommodation. Medals are also issued for brevets sanctioned by Randonneurs Mondiaux.

Audax Club Parisien’s standard rules and regulations, with additional requirements local to Sweden, apply to MSR 2025. The most important rules are the following:

  • Wear a helmet.
  • Use bike lights in dark conditions. A lit tail light is recommended on roads with high speed limits, also during daytime.
  • During the event, each rider is considered to be on a personal ride. Riders are responsible for their own safety during the event. All traffic laws must be followed and traffic signals obeyed.
  • Follow the course. A brevet is a challenge of endurance. Therefore, do not take shortcuts/detours. Exceptions can be made if the official route is closed due to unplanned road work, a traffic accident etc. If for any reason a rider leaves the course, the rider must reconnect at the location where the course was left.
  • For proof of passage at all checkpoints, brevet cards must be inscribed by event volonteers. Each rider is responsible for seeing that a proof of passage is obtained at each checkpoint.
  • Organised personal assistance between checkpoints is not permitted, for exempel follow cars or food depots next to the road. Personal assistance is however permitted at checkpoints if announced to the event organiser in advance.
  • To participate, each rider must present a personal liability insurance.
  • By registering to the event, you accept that your name, finishing time and photographs from the event in which you appear can be published and used freely (albeit non-commercially) by the organiser.

REGISTER

Please fill in the entry form below with your name, date of birth, the mobile number that you’ll be using throughout the event, a permanent email address and also any special dietary requirements you may have (gluten free, lactose free, allergies, vegan, vegetarian etc). The entry form also includes choices concerning the event program, a carpool to Umeå, the event jersey and lastly a social buffet dinner before the ride.

Please note, the organiser Randonneurs Laponia is under no obligation to refund a participant who for any reason is unable to participate in the event. Entry tickets may however be transfered or resold at cost (or lower) until the 1st of June 2025. Emergency roadworks, extreme weather and other unforeseen circumstances may force the organiser to make last minute changes and adjustments to the event, the course, checkpoints and services at checkpoints. The organiser reserves the right to make these changes without compensation to participants. If for some unforseen reason the event cannot take place in June 2025 the event will not be cancelled but instead postponed until June 2026. By registering, you accept the above-mentioned terms and conditions.

Addressing the current situation in Ukraine, Les Randonneurs Mondiaux do not list LRM events organised in Russia or Belarus in their public calendar but individual riders from these countries are permitted to participate in LRM events globally. The organiser of MSR 2025, Randonneurs Laponia, is a politically and religiously independent nonprofit organisation and follows the guidelines of Les Randonneurs Mondiaux and the directives of the Swedish government. Randonneurs Laponia will therefore not express opinions concerning current geopolitical affairs nor make enquiries into the private opinions of participators concerning the actions of their national governments. Likewise, Randonneurs Laponia expects all participators to treat fellow riders with equal respect during the event regardless of nationality, ethnicity or religion. Our sole purpose is to organise a ride for cyclists seeking to experience the solitude of the subarctic regions of Scandinavia and of being close to nature. No more, no less.
