Unscheduled roadworks – Updated 10 June
Stage 4
On stage 4 between Vilhelmina and Kittelfjäll the road has been heavily damaged during the spring thaw. Extensive roadworks have therefore started. New drainage pipes are being installed and the old paving is to be recycled down to the subbase with a pavement milling machine, to create a road surface consisting mostly of compacted coarse gravel.
The full-scale operation with the milling machine has been postponed in stages and the latest start-up was scheduled for Thursday 12 June. During the past week we have been negotiating with the contractor for a further postponement and the contractor has in turn held dialogues with the Swedish Transport Administration to see if this is possible. Today, Tuesday 10 June, an agreement has been reached not to resume work with the milling machine until Monday 16 June and then not to remove asphalt on the side of the road that MSR participants will be using, until after Monday.
The segment of the route marked in red on the map will have significant potholes och ruts and the asphalt has been removed in segments of 100 m where new drainage pipes have been installed, but it now seems that this will be the extent of the roadworks for MSR participants! A volunteer will be on location during the day to offer assistance if needed.

Stage 7
On stage 7, about 28 km from Mo i Rana, the road down to the Rana River has been temporarily closed due to the ongoing construction of a bridge over the river. Participants from previous years may remember this construction site. The road is said to open again sometime next week, but if it is closed simply stay on the E6 all the way to the Arctic Circle Centre. The new route is 1 km shorter but adds 60 metres of elevation. Given that the road may be open, the gpx file for stage 7 has not been changed.
